"We've updated our home page to make it easier to understand what's going on with the people you care about. Now your friends' posts are streamed in real-time and you have more control over what you see."
What's New on the new facebook home page layout?
In short, there will be Filter, Stream, and Publisher, and Highlights.
Filters is created to ensure you are updated on what the friends you care about are posting. Filter can be configured by friend list, applications (like Photos).
Stream is a feed, shows all posts from all your friends in real-time. Again, you can control who appears here.
Publisher, is a tool made for you to share notes, though, and photos into the stream.
Hightlights is featured photos, events, notes and more, chosen based on what your friends have interact with. This is, probably, advertising from which facebook made money.
